Sustainability levers in the industry
The industry definition gives you an idea of where important sustainability levers lie in the respective industry.
On the path to net-zero transport, the share of climate-neutral energy and alternative fuels will increase significantly. As the “champagne” of the energy transition, green hydrogen plays an important role in the decarbonization of industry and heavy-duty transport. Despite the debates about synthetic fuels, (often young) technology companies continue to push forward the production of hydrogen and synthetic energy.
The production processes are still complex and expensive and the efficiencies in converting electricity into hydrogen or e-fuels are manageable. Electrolysis plants are intended to make the production of e-fuels cheaper and more efficient – especially in regions with lots of sun and wind. At the same time, new approaches are needed, for example for conversion or separation processes for the production of biofuels, e.g. based on waste or algae.
Heat supply can also become greener with biogas and CO2-neutral gas. Devices or systems do not necessarily have to be replaced if only the energy source changes. The industry is driving development with technologies for the production of green hydrogen, which at the same time provide solutions to the storage problem of electricity from renewable energies.
The industry includes, for example, the sustainable production of all types of fuel, specifically gas production and fuel production using green hydrogen or Power-to-X processes.
